Frequently Asked Questions & Service Policies

Find answers to common questions about speech-language pathology services, telepractice, billing, and important policies below.

Common Questions

What is speech-language therapy?

Speech-language therapy supports people with challenges in speech clarity, language comprehension and expression, voice quality, memory and cognition, social communication, and swallowing. Therapy is provided by a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP).

Do I need a referral to start therapy?

No physician referral is required for private-pay clients. You can contact me directly to schedule an evaluation or therapy session.

Are sessions in-person or virtual?

All services are provided virtually via a secure, HIPAA-compliant telepractice platform. Clients must be physically located in the state of Massachusetts at the time of their session.

Are evaluations offered virtually?

Yes—in many cases, virtual evaluations are possible and valid, as long as they meet ASHA's standards of care and are appropriate for the client's needs. I'll help determine whether a remote evaluation is the best fit.

Evaluation Fee: $200 per comprehensive virtual evaluation.

How much does therapy cost?

Individual sessions: $100 each (weekly, biweekly, or monthly)

Medicare accepted for eligible clients age 65+

The Social Group: $50/session (requires one individual session per month)

Private consults for dysphagia, second opinions, or plan-of-care clarification: $100/session

Invoices are sent immediately; autopay available; superbills available anytime upon request.

Do you accept insurance?

Medicare is accepted for eligible clients age 65 and older. Otherwise, SpeechbyCC is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. I can provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) upon request, which you may submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Do you work with children?

SpeechbyCC focuses on older teens (14+), adults, and older adults. Pediatric cases are handled on a case-by-case basis—I'm happy to provide referrals to pediatric-focused SLPs if needed.

What if I'm not sure if I need therapy or if this is the right fit?

You're welcome to schedule a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your needs. This is a great way to learn more, ask questions, and see if I'm a good match before committing to a full session.

Service Policies

State Licensure Requirements

SpeechbyCC services are only available to clients who are physically located in Massachusetts at the time of each session. Catherine Christianson, M.S., CCC-SLP is licensed to practice in Massachusetts (License #SLP100914) and is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

I cannot serve clients located outside of Massachusetts—even temporarily—unless explicitly licensed in that state.

Confidentiality & Security

All services are delivered using secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of your sessions and information. Any shared documents, assessments, or personal information are handled with professional care.

Cancellations & Rescheduling

I kindly ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged a small fee, except in cases of emergency.

I will always do my best to accommodate schedule changes when possible.

Payment Policy

Invoices are sent immediately based on sessions. Payment is due upon receipt via the payment methods listed in your invoice.

Attendance & Engagement

Clients are expected to be present, engaged, and in a distraction-free environment during their sessions. If technical difficulties occur, I will make reasonable efforts to reschedule or complete the session within the scheduled time.

Discontinuation of Services

Therapy may be recommended to pause or discontinue if:

  • You've indicated you're content with progress on all goals
  • Therapy is no longer clinically necessary
  • The client misses multiple sessions without communication
  • Payment is not received for outstanding invoices
